Portland International Raceway is a compact, low-elevation road course that packs a lot of character into roughly two miles. Its long front straight launches you into the Festival Curves chicane, a fast, high‑commitment braking zone that rewards precision and punishes late, sloppy inputs. The rest of the lap mixes flowing mid‑speed corners, hard‑braking hairpins, and a sweeping back stretch that feels surprisingly quick for such a flat circuit, making PIR memorable for how much technical nuance it delivers without blind crests or massive elevation changes.

Driving enthusiasts love Portland International because it’s approachable on day one yet deep enough to keep advanced drivers engaged for years. The flat layout and clear sightlines make it ideal for learning braking points, trail‑braking, and throttle discipline; while the front‑stretch chicane, Turn 7 onto the back straight, and the final complex reward smooth, connected driving and clean passing etiquette. With generous runoff, PIR gives drivers a professional‑grade venue to focus on development rather than just surviving the lap.

Portland International Raceway sits on the site of Vanport, a World War II-era housing project that was once Oregon’s second‑largest city, before being destroyed by a catastrophic flood in 1948. The city of Portland later repurposed the surviving street grid into a road course, hosting the first Rose Cup races in 1961 and evolving into today’s permanent circuit that has seen Trans‑Am, CART/Champ Car, IndyCar, NASCAR Xfinity and more.

When you’re not circulating PIR, you’re just minutes from downtown Portland and the Columbia River, which opens up a full menu of off‑track adventures. Nearby Vancouver, WA offers the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site and easy access to hiking around Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Hood, plus the waterfalls and viewpoints of the Columbia River Gorge. Head south into Portland for food and culture - hit the International Rose Test Garden and Pittock Mansion, grab ice cream at Salt & Straw, donuts at Voodoo, or explore the city’s breweries and coffee roasters before your next HPDE session.
Always a good day at the track.
The place is well maintained, managed with kind staff and easy access to anything you might need. Plenty of bathrooms, which was impressive considering the crowd.
Great local track for events like the HOD track days. Well-maintained racing surface. The Friday/Saturday night drags are pretty good too, lots of variety in cars, good community, and easy to get a few passes in down the front strip.
I have a lot of fun at this place. From track days, drift days, drag nights, to special events, and races. Every gearhead should find an event to attend at least once - you'll be hooked.
